George Mason Alumna Sisc Johnson’s photography captures the quiet beauty of the Commonwealth. These photographs were taken while moving through Virginia, following roads, paths, and moments of curiosity. Together, they form a collection of encounters with the varied landscapes, communities, and spaces that make up the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Artist Bio:

Sisc (Sissy) Stella L. D. Johnson is an artist whose photographs begin with her family and the places that shape their lives. She is drawn to the ordinary, quiet moments and the ways memory, people, places, and time influence one another across generations.

Johnson earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from George Mason University and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Quantic School of Business and Technology.

She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts at Maine Media College. She continues to develop long-term documentary projects while photographing the surrounding landscapes.

Artist Statement

I come from resourceful people who fix what is broken, make things last, and figure things out as they go. Those values continue to shape how I move through the world and how I approach my work.

Through experiences that test us, the weathered and scarred can become ordinary, and the ordinary can become beautiful. I am drawn to the traces of time, use, and persistence that exist in both people and places. My work explores moments that might otherwise be overlooked, revealing quiet strength, resilience, and possibility.

Photography has become a way for me to remain connected to the world around me. It slows me down, keeps me present, and provides a sense of grounding. Whether working with landscapes, everyday spaces, or the built environment, I am interested in the extraordinary qualities that can be found within ordinary experiences.

My photographs are less about documenting a specific place than about creating space for reflection and connection. Through the act of making photographs, I continue to explore the relationship between familiarity and discovery, hardship and beauty, and the ways we find meaning in the world around us.
