ESTABLISHING ROOTS & RESISTING (IL)LEGALITY

A POP- UP ART SHOW

Thursday, April 21, from 6-8 PM at the Buchanan Hall Atrium Gallery

“Immigration is beautiful and natural; immigrants are essential to this country. Migration in search of new opportunities has happened for thousands of years and only became unsafe when systems were created that stigmatized and oppressed it.”

ABOUT ESTABLISHING ROOTS & RESISTING (IL)LEGALITY:

What is being an immigrant like? Perhaps you are an immigrant yourself or a child of immigrants. Many would agree that the immigrant experience and identity manifests itself individually.  Yet, our government, media, and national narratives frame the immigrant identity and experience as a monolith.  This exhibition invites you to bear witness the ways in which the immigrant experience differs based on people’s unique backgrounds. Our captivating pieces highlight how, although many immigrants experience alienation and barriers when living in this country, these struggles can manifest themselves differently. For some, lack of legal status has forced them to re-imagine forms of employment. For others, fighting back against cultural erasure forges a connection to the strength and beauty of their ancestral and cultural heritage. For all, building community and paving the way is our means of survival and resistance.

As you move through the exhibition, ask yourself: what is being an immigrant like?
