John Grunwell: Entelechies
January 27 - March 1, 2020
John Grunwell’s Entelechies series deploys a painterly vocabulary of dynamic abstract formal effects including hard-edged radial geometries, converging lines, and pulsating colors. These combinations evoke the physical phenomena that have shaped our universe such as the big bang, cosmic expansion, electromagnetic radiation, and gravitation. Grunwell’s explorations of optical intensity and allusions to real-world subject matter can be understood as a contemporary synthesis of the multivalent traditions of geometric abstraction developed by the 20th century modernists, from the reductive geometries of Piet Mondrian to the sensation oriented Op Art of Bridget Riley.
Born in Silver Spring, Maryland and presently based in Washington, D.C., Grunwell is a multi-media artist and muralist with work in private and public collections throughout the United States and abroad.
