Continuing the Narrative of Black Kirby's Visual Rhetoric by Creative Response

Black Kirby’s character Major Sankofa’s next adventure is up to you!

Major Sankofa, 2012

“Who is this man awakened in the perfect moment in time to remind of of who we always were. the people who are lost, scattered, unconscious? Major Sankofa will tell us. Will we listen, or dismiss the messenger? Are we ready? We better get ready cause Sankofa is already here. We must "go back and get it" to know where we are going.”

Sankofa’s credo is likened to the Akan people of Ghana that one should remember the past to make positive progress in the future.  Black Kirby will use their practice of critical design-making as an exercise for attendees to expand the trajectory of Major Sankofa. The narrative can be expanded visually, through performance, or words.

By immersing themselves in this workshop, participants can engage with the Sankofa philosophy and apply it to their own experiences. They'll also discover the power of critical design-making as a tool for social and political commentary, and can flex their creative muscles by producing their own work.

Ultimately, this workshop aims to promote critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the role of history in shaping the future. Join us as we explore the power of Sankofa and critical design-making to transform our world.
